Impact of COVID-19 on Our Education

The COVID-19 panยญdemic, caused by the novel coroยญnยญavirus SARS-Covโ€‘2 has changed the course of our life.  In this article, we will present our opinion that the lockยญdowns indeed had a few ancilยญlary family, enviยญronยญmenยญtal, and familยญial benยญeยญfits, but the negยญaยญtive effects outยญweighed the posยญiยญtives and that a more careful approach should have been conยญsidยญered before the wideยญspread disยญrupยญtion to the lives of the youth.

In order to reduce the spread of the virus, the govยญernยญment has taken various preยญcauยญtionยญary meaยญsures includยญing a nationยญwide lockdown.

A big concern of the panยญdemic and resultยญing lockยญdowns was how to conยญtinue eduยญcatยญing Indiaโ€™s stuยญdents effecยญtively while schools were mandaยญtoยญrily closed.  There were several sets of guideยญlines and plans issued by the govยญernยญment.  Due to school cloยญsures, there was a need to adopt a change in our eduยญcaยญtional system.  Online learnยญing was put into place, and the mantra was that eduยญcaยญtion would conยญtinue at a disยญtance, via techยญnolยญogy, and that all would be good and the eduยญcaยญtion of stuยญdents wouldnโ€™t miss a beat.

Eduยญcaยญtional instiยญtuยญtions made various efforts to reach stuยญdents through various elecยญtronic, imperยญsonal means which were readily availยญable to wealthยญier famยญiยญlies across the nation.  However, the poorest, and even many middle-class were hurt the most as they just didnโ€™t have the resources to attend the online classes because they couldnโ€™t obtain, or use effecยญtively, the gadgets and techยญnolยญogy required for online classes.

Many stuยญdents fell through the cracks.

Iniยญtially, stuยญdents were really happy because of the the lockยญdown, and espeยญcially of school cloยญsures.  They were spendยญing their whole day playing games and watchยญing movies.  Natยญuยญrally though, after a while the stuยญdents became bored with this unusual twist in their daily rouยญtines, and they realยญized that their old pre-panยญdemic routine of coming to in-person school was much better than this new lax and elecยญtronic lifestyle.  Stuยญdents were waiting for the lockยญdowns to end so that they could become free again from the isoยญlaยญtion and able to meet with their friends and attend in-person classes.

Every coin has two sides, and simยญiยญlarly, the lockยญdown also had both posยญiยญtive and negยญaยญtive effects.  On the one hand, stuยญdents had extra time to prepare for comยญpetยญiยญtive exams and self-study.  They also had more quality time with family and learnยญing to concoct new activยญiยญties at home.  However, on the other hand, the closure of physยญiยญcal schools forced stuยญdents to do online learnยญing, which had many detriยญmenยญtal effects in areas such as acaยญdยญeยญmic perยญforยญmance, strainยญing of eyeยญsight from increased screen-time, mental health issues such as depresยญsion, stress, anxiety, and frusยญtraยญtion from human alienation.

After facing this hazยญardous panยญdemic, we realize that the offline mode of study is more benยญeยญfiยญcial and proยญducยญtive as comยญpared to the virtual mode of study.  Offline classes proยญvides for direct interยญacยญtion between teachยญers and stuยญdents, hence it proยญvides a healthยญier enviยญronยญment for the student to flourยญish.  Thereยญfore, in our conยญcluยญsion, despite the few blessยญings that came our way via the lockยญdown, overall, the lockยญdowns and school cloยญsures were much more harmful  than benยญeยญfiยญcial.  The lockยญdowns gave us a better appreยญciยญaยญtion for our physยญiยญcal learnยญing enviยญronยญment and interยญperยญsonal interยญacยญtions, and we will hopeยญfully not take it for granted now that weโ€™ve seen the negยญaยญtive impact weโ€™ve expeยญriยญenced without it.
